Masvingo city council has dragged Telecel Zimbabwe to court over the none payment of over US$1million in rentals fees.
The struggling mobile operator has not been remitting a cent to the local authority since the beginning of the year after signing lease agreements with the local authority permitting the operator to erect its network boosters in the city.
According to the latest full council minutes seen by this publication, Telecel Zimbabwe has indicated that they now want a payment plan to clear its debt to avoid the legal battle.
“The Finance Director reported that letters of demand had been written to rental debtors including Telecommunication operators. It was explained that Telecel had been handed over to Council lawyers and promised to come up with a payment plan to clear their debt,”ead part of the minutes.
Meanwhile the local authority said they are also in the process of reviewing its lease agreements with other mobile telecommunications operators, Netone and Econet as they are about to expire.
