Final Year Student Killed by Boyfriend, Who Later Died by Suicide


A 22-year-old final year student of North-West University (NWU), Mamohlotši Rebecca Nchabeleng, was m8rdered by her boyfriend in South Africa. The heartbreaking discovery came after her boyfriend, who was not affiliated with NWU, was found dead in Sharpeville earlier that same day.

Nchabeleng’s body was discovered in her private residence on the university’s Vanderbijlpark Campus on Monday, August 19th, 2024.

According to authorities, a note found near the boyfriend’s body provided crucial information that led them to Nchabeleng’s location.

While the police are still investigating the circumstances surrounding her death, no arrests have been made so far.

“Our thoughts are with Mamohlotši Rebecca Nchabeleng’s family and loved ones during this difficult time,” said Professor Sibusiso Chalufu, Acting Executive Director of Student Life and DVC of Vanderbijlpark Campus Operations.

“We are committed to providing the necessary support to our students and staff as they navigate this tragic loss.”

The university has immediately taken steps to support those affected by the incident, with counseling services made available through the Student Counseling and Development Centre.

This incident has sent shockwaves through the NWU campus, highlighting once again the pervasive issue of gender-based violence in South Africa.

Nchabeleng, a graduating BEd student, had her promising future cut short in a senseless act of violence.

The university community is in mourning, and the loss of such a young , vibrant life has left an indelible mark on all those who knew and loved Mamohlotši Rebecca Nchabeleng.
