Incorporate AI in Teaching, University Lecturers Urged

Lecturers at Midlands State University’s Zvishavane Campus have been urged to adopt artificial intelligence (AI) tools in their work to improve teaching quality.

In a workshop on artificial intelligence adaptation, Professor A. Chiromo, Executive Director – Quality Assurance and Professional Development directorate highlighted that keeping up with key IT advancements is crucial.

“The adoption and integration of AI and other ICT tools will greatly enhance service delivery and quality of our graduates,” Professor Chiromo said.
Titled, “Teaching and Learning in Tertiary Institutions in the AI Era,” the workshop highlighted challenges and opportunities posed by AI.

Key presenters included Professor Chiromo and Mr. Tachiona, who discussed AI tools, detecting student abuse of AI, and maintaining quality assurance.
Faculty of Arts and Humanities – Executive Dean, Professor T. Javangwe noted that AI has permeated all aspects of life and academics cannot avoid engaging with AI platforms.

“We must pay utmost attention to AI’s good and bad effects in our domain,” Professor Javangwe stated.

The workshop examined AI’s social and ethical implications, and how it challenges traditional teaching practices.
MSU Media Lecturer, Dr. N. Kupeta indicated that the workshop opened eyes to AI realities and the need to adopt detection tools for student AI abuse while governing the institution’ AI approach.

Moving forward, experts stressed the importance of expediting AI adoption to enhance teaching and learning quality in tertiary education.
